“Come on, Dave! Pick-up!” I said to the phone I held in sweaty hands, my entire body shaking.

I was in my basement, sitting in a chair with my Remington .30–6 rifle in my lap.

The cartridge and bullets sat in the lockbox. The box was upstairs, sitting in the middle of my bed.

“Click — Hey bud. What’s up?” Dave answered the call.

“Dave? You still interested in buying my rifle?” I asked.

“For sure! Thing is, I’m tapped. I can’t afford much right now,” he said.

“Dave, if you can drop whatever you’re doing, come over here right now and pick it up — it’s yours. Free. I need it out of the house.”

A long pause.

Dave and I worked together and had gone out hunting and fishing a few times. He was the one and only person I could call my “friend” at the time.

“Dude. Are you okay? What’s going on?” His voice was calm, but the gravity of the conversation hung heavy in the air, tethering our phone lines together.

“No. Nothing is okay, and if I don’t get this gun out of here, I’m going to shoot her…
