F This — The ‘Pick a Letter’ Musical Writing Challenge

The 6th letter in the alphabet sets loose a list of 10 good musical memories.

I love a good writing prompt. Most often, fiction writing challenges capture my attention and the more constrained the prompt, the better. Some people prefer to avoid being put in a box and find it limiting to work within those confines. I am the opposite; put me in a corner and shackle me down, and I will grin the whole time I’m working on my solution. While my intention is mainly geared toward fiction writing, the challenges that spring up on Plethora of Pop are great nonfiction breaks and an exercise in a different vein.

Buddy Gott is chiefly responsible for sending us down musical rabbit holes in response to one of his prompts, but for this challenge, it was his partner in acoustic crime, Kerry Purvis, who sent me on the search for music that matters to me and answers the call to action.

The challenge couldn’t be easier — list ten songs beginning with the same letter.

It only took me three days to choose the letter, and I know Paul Combs understands. Some of the songs fell into the list right away. Others stacked up, then scrutinized, and missed the cut. Finally, my F list satisfied my criteria, and I…
