I felt this most potently when I was offered a position as operations manager for a junior oil and gas company. Experience wise, I was under qualified and I knew it. But leadership, communication and integrity wise, I was way ahead of my competition. They made an offer and when I came out to my wife who was waiting in my parked truck and told her the offer she said “Good. Now go tell them tomorrow that you need $20G more in salary because you’re going to have to deal with firing half the staff and establishing your vision and it’s going to be hell. You can stay in the field and make the same money. This is because they need you.” True story. I looked at her and thought, “who the hell do you think I am?” But I listened. I countered, They paid and after a year of pain, we were highly successful. But I didn’t believe in myself, I just believed in her.
