I think it’s inevitable that as children grow up, they also grow away from their parents, and my little rocket of joy is well on the way to distant horizons. Yet, as much as the kid reaches a fresh future, the past comes to the present.

In our car rides, those short commutes to hockey, friends, or the city, it’s kiddo’s phone and Spotify playlist that connects the car stereo rather than mine, and as the universal rule reads, the one riding shotgun gets to run the beats.

The chosen playlist often rolls out one or two of my old school artists that the youngster has fallen fond of. Those tracks include the likes of David Bowie, Tears for Fears, The Bangles, and, much to my chagrin, The Smiths. Between my child and fellow writer, Paul Combs, Morrissey seems destined to be my torment. And just as you can’t choose whom your heart will love, you can’t know what music will strike the balance between ear and spirit.

As for the new music, well, I try and keep up, but I’m busy with the tasks of being a husband and father and all it entails, but kids are honest, and if you’ve cultivated a relationship where your kids can tell you…
