Epiphany: Capitalizing on popular culture for parenting.

This past weekend my daughter celebrated her 13th birthday. It was fun with a Friday afternoon viewing of the new Jurassic Park movie, followed by Mario Cart on the big screen.

My sister and niece made the trip and stayed through the weekend, and my daughter introduced her cousin and Aunt to Stranger Things from Friday night through Saturday.

On Saturday evening, my wife and I joined in as they were about to start season 2. My wife, who has a uniquely poor memory of movies or shows already watched, asked for a quick recap of season 1.

“But what happened to Barbara, Nancy’s best friend? How did the monster get her?” My wife asked.

“Barbara died because Nancy told her to go home — rude — basically so that Nancy could hook up with Steve.” answered my daughter.

“What do you mean by ‘hook up,” my wife asked, more in an attempt to nail down the newly minted teenagers’ knowledge of sex.

“Mom — you know! Sex! Nancy and Steve went and did the nasty and ditched Barb. Then Barbara accidentally cut herself, and her blood dripped into the pool, and the…
