My solid rule is 50 pages. If I feel like it might pick up, I’ll go to 100. If it’s a total flop, I’ll be hard pressed to read another from the same author. To recover, I’ll move to my ever growing stack, since my favourite authors are dead. But, I do re-read an old favourite at least once a year.
