Last week I was driving my daughter to school for her jazz band class which goes twice a week, beginning an hour before the school bell. With this early morning commitment, you might think the kid loves blowing on her trumpet while other kids are still wiping sleep from their eyes, but you would be wrong. Hate is too strong a word, but jazz was all our sour notes after month one.
For my fledgling romantic, it wasn’t the instrument or the instructor that changed her tune; it was the sorrowful song of unrequited affection. But, unfortunately, the one my daughter imagined sharing morning music class with found another, swooning for the saxophone player. She wanted to quit, desperately pleading, promising to take on more chores and sacrifice screen time, but we wouldn’t allow it. Jazz band became a year-long, growing pain.
In hindsight, I should have warned her about saxophone players.
But, on that particular morning, she was cheerful; the end of the year was in sight, and she had gotten over the wounded heart long ago. Syncing her phone to the car’s audio, she thumbed open…
