It finally arrived last week — blessed, beautiful heat. The thermostat was stuck just below the 30°c mark, and I was driving my kiddo to another night of hockey camp (we are still in Canada). Then as I turned onto the main boulevard, we had the windows down and the sun on our faces with summertime memories and future adventures on our minds.

“Hey, Dad, I need a song.”

“Lots of choices,” I answered. “What’s the mood?”

I watched as she stuck her face into the open window and closed her eyes. Her thick hair blew over her face and parted over a small, freckled nose; she was thinking about the end of the school year, only a few weeks away, then two months of freedom, with most of it spent frolicking Atlantic Seas and beaches.

“Romance,” she answered, “and with the summer feels, but it didn’t work out. But it’s not like, sad because she’s still in love. Kind of happy regret, you know?”

I smiled and answered, “I know.”

Is there anything better than being a teenager with the school year on the way out and going wild on the way in? That’s awfully hard…
