Parenting is a journey where maps don’t count, and the road is littered with potholes and pit stops you never see coming.

I’m halfway over the threshold of turning 50, and my daughter is dipping her toes into womanhood; it’s a scary time for us both.

Of the many interests and activities, she and I share, music is near the top. Jumping in the car together, whether delivering her to hockey, heading out fishing, or routine errands, kiddo is the DJ.

I’ve been impressed to hear classic jams from The Smiths, The Clash, Corey Hart, and other old-school tunes come through the speakers, with most of those coming from her discovery.

But there are as many songs that amuse as well as impress. Occasionally she will run a playlist of today’s youthful punk. The Emo, melancholic, young soul-searching lyrics can be grim and heavy.

And then there are the surprises, the new beats, sweet lyrics, and positive vibes. Most of the time, her selections are songs full of hope, a chance at romance, and blossoming or unrequited love.

All in all, her music makes me smile, and when I hear a new song that I think would fit her groove, I send her the link…
