Love is corny. So is country music.

When I think of country music love ballads, they generally fall into two categories; Really Bad and Worse.

The male singers are usually drunk with self-flagellation, followed by shameless begging and pedestal-worthy praise of their beloved. Sorry, not sorry, but that’s gross.

Songs celebrating a couple’s romance on equal footing are rare, but they shouldn’t be. Balance is key to successful relationships. Power struggles, control, and conflict are old school. Those ideas should be given a funeral and left in the dirt for good.

So, for this and the following “girls” edition of my Rate-a-Record invitations, I am offering songs you can listen to without feeling nauseous. That’s my goal, at least. But everything is subjective, and you can’t make everyone happy.
