It was the smattering of freckles dusted across the bridge of her nose that made Wendell fall for Catriona. It was a small nose that rose with a slight lift upwards at its very end. Slim along the sides with petite teardrop-shaped nostrils, and when Catriona laughed, grimaced, or feigned shock, it was a device of beguilement. Catriona was nine then, and Wendell was only two years older when his heart had made its declaration known and he had loved Catie ever since.

Now, looking at his reflection in the mirror, Wendell adjusted his tie and thought about the eighteen years between that day and now. Although they were close friends throughout their school years, Wendell was never able to make Catie see him as more.

On his father’s advice to pursue the things he loved with fearless passion, Wendell became resolute in his affection for Catie.

When he’d taken Catie out, first to a movie, without the company of friends, and afterward to the bookstore with the café, he had been sure Catie was looking at him differently and holding the gaze of her green eyes upon him longer. It was then that Catie delivered the first dagger to…
