Very topical in our house, as my wife is an EA and has a few austistic kids to look after. But also, because the educational system is so different province-province.
On the east coast, she has a 14 yr old nephew with learning issues, probably autistic, and he gets zero classroom help. He can't read or write. At 14 in Canada. From a good family. Apparently, their rules say that each autistic child must have a teacher and an EA specially trained to handle the student and take them on one-one.
The entire school district has 6 such teachers, and very few EA's because they get paid better to work at McDonalds.
I feel terrible for those kids.
