Performances are all first-rate. Tom Hanks is on top form, and Matt Damon provides particularly strong support. It is amusing to note that prior to shooting, Spielberg put Tom Hanks and the actors in his squad through a tough boot camp, which the actors nearly quit but Hanks urged them to complete. In the meantime, Matt Damon was resting, which built their resentment of him, just as their characters resent the Ryan character in the film.
